The strategic importance of Greenland and its relevance to world peace

Greenland, the world’s largest island, located at the northern tip of the Atlantic Ocean, has emerged as a focal point in modern geopolitics due to its strategic position, abundant natural resources, and potential to influence the global balance of power. Although it is currently an autonomous territory under Danish sovereignty, its significance extends far beyond the borders of this small Nordic kingdom. In a world marked by competition among major powers such as the United States, Russia, and China, U.S. control over Greenland could play a pivotal role in promoting stability and world peace. This article explores the reasons behind its strategic relevance and argues why its integration under the American flag could benefit the global order.

An unmatched strategic location

Greenland’s geographic position makes it an invaluable asset. Situated between North America and Europe, with privileged access to the Arctic, the island serves as a natural bridge between two continents and a critical vantage point in a region gaining importance due to climate change. The melting of Arctic ice has opened new maritime routes, such as the Northwest Passage, which could revolutionize global trade by significantly reducing transit times between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Controlling Greenland means holding an advantage in overseeing and protecting these routes, granting considerable influence over international commerce.

Moreover, from a military perspective, Greenland is a critical enclave. During the Cold War, the United States recognized this value by establishing the Thule Air Base, which remains an essential component of the missile defense and surveillance systems for the Northern Hemisphere. In today’s context, where Russia has intensified its military presence in the Arctic and China seeks to expand its influence in the region, U.S. control of Greenland would bolster the West’s ability to counter these ambitions and maintain a balance of power that discourages conflict escalation.

Natural resources and their impact on global security

Greenland’s strategic importance is not limited to its location—it also lies in its resources. The island is home to vast reserves of rare earth minerals, essential for modern technology, such as neodymium and dysprosium, which are used in manufacturing batteries, wind turbines, and electronic devices. In a world increasingly reliant on these raw materials, control of Greenland could ensure a stable supply for the United States and its allies, reducing vulnerability to monopolies held by other powers, such as China, which currently dominates the rare earth market.

Additionally, the potential for hydrocarbons and fishing in its territorial waters further enhances its economic value. If these resources were managed under U.S. administration, they could benefit not only the global economy but also the Greenlandic population, fostering sustainable development that strengthens regional stability.

Greenland under U.S. control: A pillar for world peace

Greenland’s affiliation with the United States could be a decisive factor in fostering world peace for several reasons. First, it would solidify the presence of a democratic power in the Arctic, countering the ambitions of authoritarian regimes that might seek to exploit the region aggressively or destabilize it. While not without its critics, U.S. doctrine has historically prioritized stability and the maintenance of a rules-based international order, which could translate into responsible management of Arctic interests.

Second, U.S. control would reduce tensions stemming from competition over Greenland. In 2019, then-President Donald Trump’s proposal to purchase the island sparked controversy but also highlighted Washington’s strategic interest. If Greenland were formally integrated into the United States, with the consent of its population and Denmark, it would eliminate uncertainty about its future, preventing it from becoming a flashpoint among rival powers.

Finally, Greenland’s incorporation into the United States could serve as a model for international cooperation. By ensuring the autonomy and well-being of Greenlanders, Washington could demonstrate that its leadership seeks not only self-interest but also collective progress, bolstering confidence in a global system guided by democratic values.

In fact, Greenland is far more than a frozen landmass in the planet’s north—it is a geopolitical linchpin that could shape the course of the 21st century. Its location, resources, and military potential make it a coveted asset in an ever-changing world. If the United States were to assume control, with an approach that respects the will of Greenlanders and promotes international cooperation, the island could become a stronghold of stability and world peace. In a scenario where the Arctic emerges as the next major theater of global competition, Greenland’s affiliation with the United States would not only provide a strategic advantage but also represent a step toward a safer, more balanced international order.

Harvard's incoherence: Seeking funds without accountability

Harvard University, one of the world’s most prestigious academic institutions, is at the center of a controversy that calls into question its institutional coherence. In recent days, the Trump administration has frozen over $2.2 billion in federal funding allocated to the university due to its refusal to comply with a series of directives imposed by the White House. These measures, according to the government, aim to combat alleged antisemitism on campus and ensure that educational institutions receiving public funds align with certain values and practices. However, Harvard’s response reveals a stance many consider incoherent: it rejects the government’s demands and defends its autonomy while simultaneously expecting to continue receiving massive federal allocations without accountability.

The White House Demands and Harvard’s Response

The Trump administration sent Harvard a letter outlining ten categories of changes the university must implement to maintain its federal funding. These demands include measures such as reporting students deemed “hostile” to American values to the government, ensuring “diversity of viewpoints” in every academic department, and hiring a government-approved external entity to audit programs and departments accused of fostering antisemitic harassment. According to the White House, these requirements stem from the perception that Harvard has not adequately addressed antisemitism on its campus, particularly in the context of student protests related to the Gaza conflict.

Led by its interim president, Alan Garber, Harvard has categorically rejected these demands. In a letter to the university community, Garber stated that Harvard “will not surrender its independence or its constitutional rights,” asserting that the measures exceed the government’s legal authority and undermine academic freedom protected by the First Amendment.

The Incongruity: Absolute Autonomy, but with Public Funds

Harvard’s stance raises an ethical and practical dilemma. On one hand, the university claims its right to operate without external interference, invoking its autonomy as a private institution and its commitment to free expression. On the other hand, it seems to overlook that the $2.2 billion in federal funds it receives annually is not a gift but a public investment that entails responsibilities and accountability. This contradiction has sparked criticism accusing Harvard of wanting to enjoy the benefits of public funding without accepting the conditions it entails.

With an endowment of $53 billion, Harvard is the wealthiest university in the country and could, in theory, operate without relying on federal funds. However, much of its globally renowned scientific and medical research is financed precisely by these grants. The decision to reject the government’s directives while expecting the funds to keep flowing reflects an attitude that some view as arrogant. As the Department of Education noted in a statement, Harvard’s declaration “reinforces the troubling mindset of privilege” pervasive among elite universities.

Trump’s Reaction and the Tax-Exemption Debate

The Trump administration’s response was swift. In addition to freezing the funds, the president has threatened to revoke Harvard’s tax-exempt status, a move that could cost the university millions annually. On his Truth Social platform, Trump labeled Harvard an institution that “teaches hate and stupidity” and suggested it should be treated as a political entity rather than a nonprofit educational organization. This escalation has intensified the conflict, with Harvard filing a lawsuit accusing the government of illegally attacking free speech and academic autonomy.

The confrontation has sparked a broader debate about the role of universities in society and their relationship with the government. For Harvard’s critics, the university cannot claim to operate as a fully independent entity while relying on American taxpayers. Meanwhile, Harvard’s defenders, including figures like former President Barack Obama and Senator Bernie Sanders, applaud its resistance.

A Broader Context

Harvard’s case is not isolated. Columbia University, for instance, complied with several White House demands after facing the threat of losing $400 million in federal funding. Other universities, such as MIT, Stanford, and several Ivy League institutions, are facing similar pressures. Harvard’s resistance could inspire other institutions to challenge the government, but it could also set a dangerous precedent if the university loses its legal battle or faces significant economic sanctions.

In Summary…

Beyond political rhetoric, the conflict highlights a fundamental tension: To what extent can private universities demand total autonomy when they rely on public funds? Harvard’s attitude in this standoff with the Trump administration reveals a hard-to-ignore contradiction. The university vehemently defends its autonomy and right to operate without interference but appears surprised and offended when the government questions its entitlement to billions in public funds. By refusing accountability, Harvard seems to overlook that federal funds are not a right but a shared responsibility.

The wastefulness of USAID

A significant portion of the spending by USAID (United States Agency for International Development) can be described as “outrageous,” if not outright “controversial,” prompting the Trump administration to target the agency as a prime candidate for budget cuts. Let’s break it down…

“Diversity and Inclusion” Projects Abroad
Estimated Amount: Up to $1.5 million in a single case (Serbia).
Description: Reports have highlighted expenditures on “diversity, equity, and inclusion” (DEI) programs in countries like Serbia, where USAID allocated funds to promote initiatives that offer no tangible benefit to U.S. interests or its citizens. A glaring example of “ideological waste” is the sponsorship of a DEI-themed musical in Eastern Europe, costing $70,000. This is just one of many such budget items.

Funding for Questionable NGOs
Estimated Amount: Billions of dollars (exact figures vary by source).
Description: USAID has been used to funnel money to non-governmental organizations (NGOs) tied to political agendas linked to figures like George Soros or events like the Davos Forum, with little to no transparency for taxpayers.

“Environmental Studies” with Dubious Purposes
Estimated Amount: $520 million (based on specific critiques).
Description: One highly criticized expenditure is a supposed “environmental study” costing $520 million, denounced as an attempt by USAID to influence global media under the guise of “sustainability.” This is seen as exorbitant spending on “progressive” agendas that do not directly benefit Americans.

Questionable Humanitarian Aid in Conflicts
Estimated Amount: $3.7 billion in 2024 for Sub-Saharan Africa.
Description: While much of USAID’s foreign aid goes to humanitarian programs—like the $3.7 billion allocated in 2024 for health and refugee support in Africa—some items raise eyebrows, such as the $50 million sent to Gaza for “condoms.”

Global Reproductive Health Programs
Estimated Amount: Hundreds of millions annually (varies by year).
Description: USAID has historically funded reproductive health initiatives, including access to contraceptives and abortions in developing countries. These programs are viewed as a misuse of public funds to push agendas contrary to American values.

All these expenditures potentially add up to billions of dollars and are now in the crosshairs of the new “America First” policy. As the government points out, every budget item must answer the question: “Does this make America stronger, more prosperous, and safer?” For this reason, plans are already underway in 2025 to slash USAID’s staff from 10,000 to fewer than 300 employees and significantly reduce its budget.

Speed in Decision-Making: A business lesson in the face of bureaucracy

In a world where time is as valuable a resource as capital, the ability to make decisions quickly has become a determining factor for success in business. The recent measures implemented by Donald Trump, characterized by an almost dizzying speed, stand in stark contrast to the bureaucratic sluggishness that defines the European Union (EU). This contrast not only highlights the differences between two approaches to leadership and management but also offers a critical lesson for the business world: well-considered decisions, executed swiftly, are key to seizing opportunities and staying competitive. The EU, with its cumbersome administrative machinery and endless processes, is demonstrating—almost as a case study—how bureaucracy can become the enemy of progress.

Since his return to the U.S. presidency, Donald Trump has rolled out a series of economic policies, such as imposing tariffs on exports from other countries. These decisions, regardless of their merits or long-term consequences, stand out for the speed with which they have been announced and set into motion. In a matter of weeks, Trump has turned campaign promises into concrete actions, sending a clear message: in a dynamic global environment, agility can be a decisive strategic advantage.

On the other hand, the European Union, with its 27 member states and its need for consensus, is trapped in a system that prioritizes exhaustive deliberation over immediate action. When Trump announced his tariffs, Brussels’ response was swift in only one sense: a verbal condemnation and a promise to “respond firmly.” However, European leaders have acknowledged that any countermeasure they undertake will require extensive negotiations among member states—a process that could take months or even years before translating into effective policies. This sluggishness is not new; it is an inherent feature of the EU’s structure, where decisions must pass through multiple bureaucratic filters, from the European Commission to the Council and Parliament, not to mention consultations with national governments.

In the business world, this dichotomy carries profound implications. The companies that succeed are those capable of carefully analyzing their options—considering risks, benefits, and available data—without becoming paralyzed in the process. Reflection is essential, but indecision is fatal. A market opportunity, such as a new customer niche or a temporary competitive edge, doesn’t wait for an organization to finish debating internally. If a company takes too long to launch a product, adjust prices, or respond to a competitor, the moment passes, and success slips away. Trump, with his direct style and readiness to act, embodies this mindset, while the EU, with its measured approach, illustrates the dangers of letting bureaucracy dictate the pace.

This isn’t about advocating for impulsive or poorly prepared decisions. Speed without analysis can lead to disaster, as evidenced by numerous cases of companies that have failed by rushing forward without a solid strategy. The key lies in striking a balance between rigorous evaluation and agile execution. Successful organizations establish processes that enable informed decisions within short timeframes: dedicated teams, real-time data, and a culture that values action over procrastination. In contrast, the EU shows how an excess of administrative layers and a constant quest for consensus can dilute responsiveness, leaving its businesses and citizens at a disadvantage against faster competitors.

Trump’s tariffs provide a perfect example. While the United States implements its measures and reshapes global trade in its favor, the EU remains mired in internal discussions about how to respond. By the time European countermeasures take effect, the economic damage may already be done, and U.S. companies could have solidified their position. In business terms, this delay would equate to losing market share or allowing a rival to leap ahead with a disruptive innovation. The lesson is clear: time is a strategic asset, and those who fail to manage it effectively will fall behind.

Bureaucracy, as exemplified by the EU, isn’t just a governmental problem; it also plagues many companies that, in their effort to avoid mistakes, create rigid structures and endless processes. Yet success in the 21st century belongs to those who can adapt to the pace of change. Thoughtful decisions are indispensable, but it’s the speed of their implementation that makes the difference between seizing an opportunity and regretting its loss. As Trump charges ahead at full speed, the EU serves as a reminder that, in an accelerated world, slowness isn’t just inefficiency—it’s a recipe for failure.

"Trump News" should be a new newspaper

All media outlets divide their informational content into various sections, such as politics, events, sports, society, and so on. However, from now on, every media outlet will need to add a new section: “Trump News”—that is, news generated by the President of the United States, Donald Trump. He has burst onto the scene with such force that every passing minute brings a new story. These are not just locally relevant news items; they also resonate across the rest of the world. The sheer volume of news he generates each day is so immense that it could fill a daily publication or a dedicated news broadcast entirely focused on him. How right the "prophetic" magazine "The Economist" was when it published its 2025 forecast cover, featuring a collage of images where the entire world revolved around him.

Russia and Ukraine: Who Started the War?

European politicians and the media have always sold us the idea that Russia started the war against Ukraine, and now Donald Trump comes along and says the opposite—that it was Ukraine who started the war. So, what’s the truth? Who’s right?

Donald Trump has claimed that Ukraine “could be Russian someday” and has suggested that the war could have been avoided if Ukraine had reached an agreement with Russia before the conflict began. His argument is based on the idea that Ukraine should have negotiated with Russia to prevent the escalation, implying that the lack of an agreement contributed to the start of the war. Furthermore, he has stated that Ukraine “never should have started” the conflict, suggesting that Ukraine’s resistance to Russia’s actions could be seen as a trigger.

These statements from Trump fit into his narrative that he could have prevented the war if he had been president at the time, reflecting a perspective that seeks to simplify the situation by focusing on negotiation as the solution to geopolitical problems. However, this view overlooks the broader context of Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and its support for separatists in eastern Ukraine, which are crucial factors in the origins of the current conflict.

Ultimately, both Russia and Ukraine might have avoided this war if, from the outset, negotiations and international mediation—rather than taking one side or the other—had actively intervened to try to find a peaceful solution. And what seems quite likely is that we may never know who started it, but we can assume that Donald Trump—thanks to his mediation—will manage to end it, much to the displeasure of European Union leaders who have been left looking like incompetents who have only managed to complicate the situation, prolong the conflict, and fail to find any solution.

A story of jealousy and incompetence

In a turn of events that has left the European Union and NATO with their jaws on the floor, Donald Trump has achieved what seemed impossible: finding common ground between Putin and Zelensky to seat them at the peace negotiation table for Ukraine. Yes, friends, the very same Trump, known for his viral tweets and golden hair, has proven to be more effective than an army of diplomats in Armani suits.

The story began a few days ago when Trump, with his direct and no-nonsense style, decided to take the reins of the conflict. First, he called Putin. They say the conversation was so cordial that they almost seemed to be toasting with vodka through the phone. Then, it was Zelensky's turn, who, despite expectations, didn't hang up after three seconds but instead listened intently to the peace proposals.

Meanwhile, in Brussels and at NATO headquarters, the news hit like a bucket of cold water. European politicians, accustomed to long meetings and endless speeches, suddenly found themselves outdone by Trump, who, in just two days, had managed to achieve what they couldn't in months of fruitless talk. The feeling of being sidelined was palpable. "How is it possible that Trump, famous for being as diplomatic as an elephant in a china shop, has managed this?" they whispered among themselves.

To make matters worse, a Russian leader, in a moment of brutal honesty, described Europe as "a frigid old woman full of jealousy." Wow! That description not only hurt but also highlighted the frustration of a continent that, with its sanctions and ineffective policies, seemed to have contributed more to the mess than to the solution.

Humor has not been lacking in this scenario. Memes have flooded the internet, depicting Trump as a superhero, with the EU and NATO playing the roles of frustrated extras. One of the most viral shows Trump with a negotiator's cape, while in the background, European leaders look on with long faces as if they've just realized their peace strategies were less effective than an umbrella in a hurricane.

However, beyond the laughter and sarcasm, this episode raises serious questions about the effectiveness of international institutions in times of crisis. Has Trump been a negotiation genius, or has he just been lucky? Or perhaps, the desperation for peace has made everyone more willing to listen, even to someone whose diplomacy is as subtle as a pneumatic hammer?

Regardless, the fact remains that while Europe was licking its ego's wounds, Ukraine and Russia seem ready to sit at a negotiation table. And though Trump has become the unexpected protagonist of this story, the real winner would be peace. Because, at the end of the day, what matters is that the guns fall silent, even if it's with a bit of humor and a lot of irony.

Editor's Note: You don't need to be a genius to know that peace is complicated, but maybe, just maybe, a little humor and a fresh perspective can help unblock what seemed impossible.

Topic of the day: The innovative proposal on Gaza

Out of all the information available relevant to February 10, 2025, one of the most significant events is the proposal by U.S. President Donald Trump to take control of Gaza and turn it into a "Middle East Riviera." This announcement has elicited considerable international reaction and could have broad geopolitical implications. Let's examine it in detail...

On February 10, 2025, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced a proposal that has shaken international politics: the intention to take control of Gaza and transform it into what he has termed a "Middle East Riviera." This declaration has not only sparked controversy but has also put Gaza and the Middle East region under the global microscope.

Trump's idea to control Gaza is based on a vision to economically revitalize the area, turning it into a tourist and business destination akin to the famous European Rivieras. However, this proposal is more complex than a mere economic development initiative. It involves the direct or indirect administration of a territory that has been a focal point of conflict between Israel and Palestine, and it could now drastically change the dynamics of power and control in the region.

The international community has responded in varied ways. The United Nations (UN) has expressed concern, highlighting that "any forced deportation or transfer of people without legal basis is strictly prohibited." This comment alludes to the potential implications of the proposal on Gaza's Palestinian population. Several countries, particularly those with interests in the region, have condemned the idea, fearing it might exacerbate existing tensions.

Political and Humanitarian Implications:

Regional Politics: The proposal could significantly alter the relationships between the United States, Israel, and neighboring Arab states. The possibility of the U.S. taking a more direct role in territorial control in Gaza could be seen as explicit support for Israel, which might further destabilize the region.
Humanitarian Impact: The population of Gaza already lives in precarious socioeconomic conditions with limited access to basic services. The transition to a "Riviera" model involves a massive restructuring of the territory, which could lead to forced displacements or significant changes in residents' daily lives.
Legitimacy and Rights: Control of Gaza by a foreign power raises questions about Palestinian sovereignty and rights. The legitimacy of such action under international law would be intensely debated, possibly leading to international court cases or increased criticism of the United States in global forums.

Now, from an economic perspective, if the proposal were implemented, it could attract significant investments and tourism development, but at the expense of potential social and cultural conflict. Transforming Gaza into a modern economic hub would require massive international collaboration and a paradigm shift in the region's politics.

Therefore, Trump's proposal on Gaza is not just about economic development; it deeply touches on politics, humanity, and international legality. While some might see this move as an opportunity for peace and prosperity, others view it as a threat to Palestinian autonomy and rights. The world watches closely to see how this bold plan will unfold, potentially redefining relationships and power balances in the Middle East.

Trump's Crusade against Wokeism

Since his return to the White House, Donald Trump has launched an offensive against "woke ideology," a cultural and political movement advocating for gender equality, LGTBIQ+ rights, and multiculturalism. This war has marked a turning point in both American and global politics, garnering both support and controversy.

But what does "woke" mean? The term "woke" derives from the English verb "wake," meaning to awaken, and has become a symbol of social awareness in the United States. Originally, it was used to refer to being alert to social injustices, especially racism. However, in recent years, it has also encompassed gender equality, LGTBIQ+ rights, and other progressive causes. For its critics, including Trump and his allies, "wokism" represents a threat to traditional values, national independence, and individual freedom, morphing into a form of tyranny that attempts to impose a "single way of thinking."

Anti-Woke Executive Orders and Policies

From his first actions as president, Trump has shown a clear rejection of woke ideology. Among his initial executive orders, notable are those eliminating government programs promoting "gender ideology" and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). He has declared that he will only recognize two genders: male and female, and has urged companies and universities to abandon their DEI policies under threat of investigations and potential lawsuits.

Trump's anti-woke push has resonated in the private sector. Companies like Walmart, Disney, and other multinationals have recalibrated their diversity policies, fearing repercussions or seeking alignment with the new administration. This has created an environment where progressive corporate policies are being reviewed or abandoned, showcasing how presidential rhetoric can influence business culture.

For its supporters, this means a return to traditional values and a rejection of what they consider "reverse discrimination" or policies that favor minorities at the expense of the majority.

Global Implications

Trump's crusade against wokeism is not just a domestic U.S. policy; it has global implications. Leaders like Javier Milei in Argentina and other conservative leaders in Europe have adopted similar rhetoric, indicating a global countercurrent against what they see as excesses of progressivism.

While some view these policies as a return to common sense and meritocracy, others see them as a direct attack on civil rights advancements and social justice. What is clear is that this confrontation has placed woke ideology at the center of public debate, forcing all actors to take a stance on an issue that will undoubtedly remain relevant in American politics and beyond. This is a battle between what is perceived as exaggerated progressivism (woke) and a return to common sense.
