The magical moment of a gift

(Sunday Poetry Corner)
That truly is a magical moment—when you give a gift and the person receiving it prepares to open it in your presence. Age doesn’t matter, because we all feel the thrill of being loved by others, and when we receive a gift, we understand that the object is the materialization of a feeling.

Speaking of feelings, then, it seems fitting that poetry should be an appropriate vehicle to express what that magical moment of giving a gift is like…

MY GIFT

You look at me as I receive
from your hands the gift
you had promised so much.
It’s small and surprises me.
I uncover it step by step,
and I feel in it the affection
I never got from my parents.

With the light filtering through my back
all the way to the end of the room,
the awaited moment arrives,
I open it and—there they are! Two of them!
What beautiful earrings!
So grown-up!

I put them on right away
and I hug you and smile at you,
the best part of this day
has been you, my uncle.
